Hello everyone, its your neighborhood friendly pyschopath here, Dev. This week, I've decided to put aside my eccentric alter-ego and grace you all with a bit of sanity. Here we go!
Watch Nausica of the Valley of the Wind! I cannot stress how important it is that Wolf's Rain fans watch this. My reasons for this are simple. But first... let's talk about what Nausica is all about.
Synopsis:
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind is set in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, it has been one thousand years since a terrible disaster where giants walked the earth and burned everything to the ground.
Strange poisonous jungles are spreading across the planet. The toxins of these giant insect infested jungles can kill a human in less than minutes.
Not all is lost. There are several kingdoms spread across the world. Of all these kingdoms, there is one nestled by the seaside, protected by it's breeze they do not fear the poisonous jungle.
Those who inhabit this kingdom are known as the people of the wind. Their princess is the kind, naive, but strong Nausica. Her kindness is only surpassed by her beauty.
These people have a special bond with mother earth. They do not fight amongst themselves as do the other kingdoms. The valley of the wind is at peace... but not anymore...
As other kingdoms begin war, Nausica's homeland is caught in the middle. Not only that, but foolish soldiers attempt the unthinkable-the rival of ancient weapons.
Her kingdom hangs in the balance. Nausica's choices will effect the outcome of the planet itself.
My Review:
First and foremost, I have to mention the fact that this movie was made in 1984! Its old. The animation is obviously outdated. However, I must say that despite it's age, the movements are surprisingly smooth and fluid. You see, when you wright an review for something so old, you gotta dumb down the scales, and even when it is compared to the animation of today I feel that it still holds up.
Nausica is set in a fantasy world, but the world is told so well through the characters and their actions that you almost believe that its real. Every character will leave his or her mark on you. You will look at this character and think "so that's why he's doing that. or that's why she's doing this."
I can rant on and on about how well driven these characters are and how believable they are, but I wont. Im sure you get the picture already. What I really want to discuss is the stuff below the surface. The ideas and concepts the creator was trying to get you, me, the viewer, to realize.
This is a movie with purpose. Much like Wolf's Rain. While Wolf's Rain's purpose may have been unclear at times and hard to full understand, it's still there regardless. That is why I liked it so much. That's why you all liked it so much. Even if we don't notice it, its still there pulling at you from behind the scenes.
Nausica is about simplicity and the joy and peace that can be found in it. I don't want to ruin the movie so that's all I'll say. Anyway...
I beg of you all, please, go get this DVD and watch it. If you do, maybe I'll stop being crazy. Maybe...
Seriously. Watch Nausica. You won't regret it. Its an epic romance of courage and love. You'll be moved by this great tale.
