Outside Deling City once again, the Garden had landed and the team of eight climbed off the ship ready to start the search. Squall stood before the other seven and began, “We all know where we’re going, but the one thing to remember is to keep your eyes and ears open. We’re looking for any info on the missing wolves and on Quistis. Anyone that finds anything should report back to Garden immediately. One thing I should point out to those going into Deling lay on low profile. Don’t give too much information on yourself and don’t do anything to make those soldiers wanna take you in. Subtly look for your answers in there. As for the rest of you…look around and talk to people. I can’t stress this enough. Sure some people won’t be willing to talk, but some will so keep an eye out for those that are willing to converse. I guess that’s it.” He walked over and handed Selphie some Gil, “Take this into the city and rent a car then you and Kiba can drive to Dollet from here. I’ll give you extra for fuel if you might need it.” “Alright Squall.” She nodded, “And thanks for letting me help…those books were giving me a headache.” “No problem…now you two get going,” he turned to Hige and Toboe, “You two are going into Deling. You shouldn’t have much trouble since they don’t know you in there, but just remember what I said. And it won’t hurt for you to talk to some people too.” “Alright,” Hige exclaimed and grabbed Toboe’s arm, “Let’s go runt!” “I’m coming!” he yelled trying to keep up. “Tsume,” Squall looked at him, “Zell should be arriving anytime with the Ragnarok…you two know what to do.” “I know.” He stated looking out over the hill just as Zell came over the horizon and landed a huge red ship down beyond the city. As the back hatch opened up he took off and up into the ship as it once again lifted into the air and headed to the south of Deling. Squall nodded and then turned to Irvine, “Well…I guess it’s you and me now. We should know the Tomb of the Unknown King well.” “Yep…I sure remember that place. I just hope we don’t get lost.” “It should be fine…we’re just really going looking for clues. So anyway…let’s go.” He said. Irvine agreed then took off behind Squall to the small cave just a little ways from the city.
Just inside Deling City Toboe stopped and looked toward the car rental place watching Selphie and Kiba getting a car. He admired her spunkiness for a moment then commented to Hige, “I don’t remember seeing her before.” “This is no time to get all emotional over a girl. We’re on a mission.” Hige told him thinking of how ironic he sounded. Toboe only looked at him feeling embarrassed, “No…it’s not that…it’s just well usually the girl in blue comes.” “Rinoa? You know she stayed back with Cheza…somebody had too.” “I know…I just oh…never mind. Let’s just go.” He allowed his eyes to shift away from Selphie then continued on into the city as Hige said this time, “Hey! Wait up!”
Further down in the city Hige and Toboe continued on as Toboe tried to remember some of the ways he had seen in his trip here before. He pointed down the sidewalk and as they started walking came into a group of stores and a hotel. Hige stopped looking up at the sign above him wondering, “I wonder if we’ll be able to find anything in there?” “I don’t know…it’s worth a shot.” Toboe replied continuing on through the door. As they stepped in they both saw a set of stairs to the right as a woman at the front desk asked, “Welcome to the Deling Hotel…is there anything I can do for you?” Hige smiled and whispered to Toboe, “Let me handle this.” He then walked up to the counter and looked across at her, “Actually…yes. We’re kinda new here, but were looking for a nice city to buy a house in and well…we were wondering if you could give us any info about this place.” “Well,” she smiled, “I can try. What would you like to know?” “Ummm…who’s the president here in the city? I mean what’s his name and where is he from if you know what I mean.” “Oh,” she nodded, “Yes he is currently President Dole. He showed up after Deling was assassinated, but as far as where Dole is from…I’m just not sure. Something else?” “Eh,” he thought, “What does he like? I’m just curious as I heard once you can tell a lot about a person by the things they like.” She looked down at the counter a moment pondering then looked up, “Well… I do know he likes striking animals. He’s brought them in before until some of the people began to complain about how it was cruel so he stopped for a while. I was surprised to see a new shipment come in yesterday…he’s gonna catch it for that.” “Oh yeah,” Hige grinned knowing he’d opened a door, “What kind of animals were they?” “I believe they were wolves, but I’m not sure exactly…a friend of mine was telling me about it. I didn’t get to see them, but I heard they were beautiful.” “Wow!” Toboe stepped in, “I love wolves…I would have loved to see them!” “Yeah,” Hige agreed, “Do you know if he ever shows them off?” “I don’t think so,” she started but stopped when someone came through the door, “I’m sorry but I have to help this customer. I hope I helped though.” “Yeah,” he nodded then waved as he walked off down the stairs to the right, “Thank you.” Toboe followed and once they were at the bottom took Hige’s side asking, “What are we doing down here?” “Searching for more answers…I know someone around here has to know more.” He looked around at the lounge area of the hotel then found a place and sat down. In the far corner a soldier stood looking very bored as he stood guard, and Toboe tensed a little starting to feel nervous. He pointed as he whispered, “Hige…it’s a soldier. I think we should leave.” “Don’t be dumb,” Hige replied, “if we just jump up and leave they’ll know something’s up. We’ll just sit for a moment.” From the bar at the side a young woman came up and looked down at them, “May I offer a drink?” “No thanks,” Hige turned her down, “we’re just here for the show.” He pointed up to the stage at the front of the room. The girl nodded then walked over serving an older man in a far corner. Hige and Toboe sat there a little longer when it was decided the time had come for them to leave, however when they stood Hige felt a hand come down on his shoulder. With a shudder he turned to see who it was and grew confused when he looked down at the old man. He smiled, “Hey there! Something I can help you with?” The old man leaned in and whispered, “You wanna know more about the president? Come with me.” “Yes sir.” He nodded and followed as Toboe tagged along wondering if this was a good idea. The old man lead them out into an alley way outside the hotel and leaned on a wall as he looked at them, “The woman at the counter was right when she said the president was President Dole, but she’s one of the many ones being deceived around here. Dole is supposed to be the president here, but anyone in their right mind can tell he’s not here anymore. I don’t know what happened to him, but the one that’s running the palace is not Dole.” “How do you know all this?” Hige asked getting a creepy feeling. “You hear a lot when you’ve sat in that bar as much as I have. Those soldiers all have big mouths when they think no one is listening.” “The soldiers,” Toboe asked. “Yes…sure not all of them know, but there are a select few that know of the turn around here in Deling. The General for one…he’s a major part of the cover up.” “The General,” Toboe thought for a moment, “That’s that girl’s father…” “Rinoa,” Hige asked. “Yeah…that’s what she said, and he told her he knew nothing of it.” He frowned wondering how people could lie so much especially to the ones they love. The old man only shook his head, “I’m afraid so…the shipment you wanna know about was wolves as the attendant said, but what she doesn’t know is…it wasn’t the president that ordered them in at all, and to be frank I don’t think they’re from here either. All that roams these plains and forests now are the hideous monsters that fell from the sky.” “You could be pretty close.” Hige told the old man, “But if you know so much about this then who’s in the president’s place? I mean someone has to be running things up there?” “Yes, but unfortunately the deception in this city has left that area shrouded in mystery. I’ve wondered that myself, but nothing has come out yet. He must be very cleaver, or perhaps not even human at all…all I know is he’s got this whole city tricked to believe Dole is still running things.” “About the wolves,” Toboe asked, “do you know anything about that?” “Not much…I know he has a fascination for the white one as I heard one of the soldiers mention, but really past that I know nothing other than there are four. They have to be keeping them in the palace, but you can guarantee it’s heavily guarded to keep anyone out.” “I bet.” Hige agreed, “Well…thanks for all your help but we kinda have to go now…we’re meeting friends.” “Yes,” he nodded, “I’m glad I could help…I just have one request.” “Name it.” “Don’t tell anyone where you heard this from…I’ve lived a peaceful life here through most of it…I’d like to die that way also.” “No problem…our lips are sealed.” Hige promised then waved to the old man as he and Toboe ran from the alley way. The old man grinned then turned walking from the alley back toward the hotel, but as he got further his shadow seemed to change height before he suddenly disappeared.

Far over in the cities to the south of Deling, Zell and Tsume had already visited Winhill and were now headed to Timber. No one within Winhill knew anything so the outlook of anyone in Timber knowing much seemed very unlikely. The large red ship now sat outside the small town as Tsume followed behind Zell through the front entrance, and into the city. Zell stopped and looked around wondering where to go first as he scratched his head, “Man…Rinoa would have been better at this.” “Where do you propose we go then?” Tsume asked him looking around the city. Zell turned in a full circle then looked toward the end of the street and nodded, “The Timber Maniacs building is down there…they always seem to know a lot. Maybe we should go by there.” “Maybe indeed,” Tsume agreed then took off down the street. Zell watched a moment then followed until he stopped outside the building. He looked up at the large sign above the door, “It amazes me this place is still open…they don’t do much now.” “Doesn’t matter,” Tsume started past him, “As long as they have the information.” “Yeah…I guess.” Zell huffed hating feeling rushed. As he turned back to the door from across the street he heard a soft voice call out, “Please sir…can you help me? I have no where to go and I am so tired.” He turned back thinking someone was talking to him noticing a girl on her knees asking a man before her for some help. The man only sneered down at her and pushed her hands from him as he continued to walk covering his face from view. Zell shuddered at the sight and called to Tsume, “Hold up.” “What?” Tsume turned back and sighed rolling his eyes as he watched Zell run away from the building. Zell continued on toward the girl and hollered at the man, “Hey! Show a little compassion why don’t you! She only wanted help.” The man only ignored him and continued on his way as he whistled and disappeared down the street. Zell turned back to the girl, “I’ll help.” She looked up at him her brown eyes sparkling as she began to cry, “Thank you…thank you so much.” She tried to stand now feeling embarrassed by her state but failed as she stated, “I only need a place to stay…I came from Deling City…but I never thought about bringing…money.” “Deling?” he looked her in the eyes and offered her a hand seeing she was exhausted, “Really?” Tsume listened, with his back turned, but quickly spun facing them when she mentioned Deling and was shocked when he saw the very girl from the palace with Zell. He dashed from the door and over to the spot as he asked, “You escaped?” The girl gasped as her head came around to meet him and she said, “You…I knew you were alive.” She stopped taking a breath, “I’m sorry…I am so…very…” she started to say but fell to the ground her hand slipping from Zell’s. Zell knelt down beside her and shook her as he called, “Miss…hey Miss are you alright? What happened!?” “I don’t know!” Tsume moved in over her and looked at her, “We have to get her out of here and to a doctor!” “But…how do you even know her?” “That’s not important,” he reached over touching her hand feeling her skin was very cold, “I have to help her.” “But we still have to go in Timber Maniacs.” Zell reminded him. “Then go,” Tsume told him as he picked her up from the ground, “I’m not leaving her again.” Zell sighed realizing he wasn’t going to give up, “Take her to the ship…I’ll meet you back there in a few minutes. We can take her to the infirmary back at Garden.” Tsume only nodded then turned and started out of the city carrying Kenzi along with him. Inside Garden now in the infirmary, Zell and Tsume both stood as the resident doctor, Dr. Kadowaki, looked the young girl over. She only shook her head as she took down the stats and asked, “And you two found her where?” “Timber,” Zell said again, “But is she alright…I mean she just passed out on us.” “She’s fine,” Dr. Kadowaki nodded, “She’s just got a bad case of exhaustion…all she needs is a lot of rest to get her back up to health.” Reaching over she moved her head to the side and back, “Also she seems to have a few minor scraps and cuts, but other than that…there’s no physical damage.” Tsume looked back over his shoulder toward them wondering how she had ended up so far south, but couldn’t come up with anything. He sighed as he now studied her unsure of the reason such a good natured girl would be with such an awful man. Without a word he stepped from the room and left the infirmary. Zell looked back over his shoulder noticing he had gone and only looked at Dr. Kadowaki as she asked, “So what’s his story? He seemed very concerned for this girl.” “I don’t know,” Zell shrugged, “I saw her on the street, but then all of a sudden he comes up talking to her like he knew her. I asked him from where, but he never said. The next thing I know he’s picked her up and said he wasn’t going to leave her. I didn’t want to question too much…he doesn’t seem to like it.” “Some are just like that, but I’m sure when she wakes up she can answer some of our questions. Now we just have to wait.” “Yeah,” Zell nodded feeling very confused, but glanced up when from the intercom Squall came over requesting all that had been on the search to report to the second floor. He stood, “Well…I guess that’s me too. I’ll be by later to check on her.” “Alright.” The doctor nodded as he walked out the door. She stood then walked from the room pulling the little curtain too as she made her way back to her desk.
On the second floor the room was full with everyone except Tsume. Squall waited a little longer for him to show up before facing the group to begin. He took his usual spot on the desk as he started, “Irvine and I found nothing at the Tomb of the Unknown King. We searched the area for clues, but nothing turned up.” He looked at Selphie then at Kiba, “Did you two find anything?” “No,” Selphie shook her head, “we asked all over Dollet, but no one knew of anything strange especially in Deling they said.” “Toboe…Hige what did you two find out?” he asked looking at them. Hige stood up, “We met up with an old man…he told us a lot of stuff on the wolves and the presidential palace, but nothing on the instructor.” “What did he say?” “He said the real president was gone, but somehow everyone was being fooled to believe he was still running the city. He swore someone else was controlling things, but he said he didn’t know who.” “Yeah,” Toboe agreed, “And he said the wolves were in that palace but it was heavily guarded and impossible to get through. He said he had a big fascination with the white one.” Toboe shot Kiba a glance. Kiba’s head came around and he stared back at Toboe as he now grew confused. “How did he know all of this? Did he mention?” Squall asked. “Yeah,” Hige stated, “He said the soldiers around there had big mouths and that’s where he heard it from. We saw a few about, but for the most part…there didn’t seem to be too many around. He also mentioned that the General had a lot to do with this.” “Where did you meet this old man at?” “The hotel.” “Hmmm…well we really have no way of checking things out for now, but who knows his information could have some truth to it.” He looked over at Zell, “Where is your partner?” “Heh,” Zell grinned, “I don’t know if I would really call him a partner…we brought a girl into the infirmary that he insisted on bringing, but he wouldn’t tell me who she was or how he knew her. He left while I was still there with Dr. Kadowaki and I haven’t seen him since.” Squall sighed, “A girl? I’ll check into it as soon as the meeting is over, but aside from that did you find anything else out?’ “Yeah…I went into Timber Maniacs since they seem to know a lot and the woman in there told me quite a bit that I found odd.” “Oh?” “Yeah…I mean she said that lately there have been a lot of requests for older magazines, especially those about junctioning and embodiment. She found it odd because they were so specific about what they wanted, and she mentioned that all the requests came from Deling City.” “Junctioning?” he paused for a moment to think then looked toward Rinoa, “You don’t think this could have anything to do with Quistis’s disappearance do you?” “I don’t know.” She shrugged unsure. “Did this lady mention if she had actually sent off any of these magazines that were requested?” Squall turned to Zell. “Yeah…she said some of them they had, but there were some they didn’t have any of.” “Okay…I want you to do something. You and Irvine go back to Timber and ask her if they have any other copies of the ones they sent off and if they do then get a copy.” He got up and handed Zell some Gil, “Then bring them back and we’ll take a look at them.” “Alright,” Zell stood. Irvine joined him and the two of them went out the door as Squall looked around the room wondering, “Someone is going to have to get inside that palace…I have a feeling all our answers lie in there.” “But who,” Rinoa asked, “everyone here has pretty much been seen in the city. Who could we get to go in and how?” “I don’t know…” he said puzzled, “but we’ll have to think of something. Take a break for a while and I’ll let you all know something when Zell and Irvine get back from Timber. This whole junctioning and embodiment thing has me worried.” He stood then walked from the room. Rinoa looked around at everyone then jumped up and followed behind him. The others sat there a moment until Kiba stood and looked at Cheza, “Stay here with Hige for a moment…I’ll be back.” “Where are you going?” Hige asked. “To talk to Tsume,” Kiba merely said as he went out the door. Hige only looked at Toboe and shrugged then pointed to the back of the room at Selphie still sitting there. Toboe blushed, feeling embarrassed, but stood up to go over and talk to her.

Over in the presidential palace in Deling City, within the room marked President Dole, Galadin slammed his fist on the desk in front of him. The soldier that stood before him shook as Galadin said, “What do you mean she escaped, and how come I wasn’t notified immediately!?” “I…I’m sorry sir,” the soldier apologized, “some of the others told me it wouldn’t be a good idea to disturb you sir. We took the best possible action to catch her, but somehow she got away anyway. We searched all night, but we found no sign of her anywhere.” “Not good enough,” he rumbled, “That girl knows everything there is to be known that’s going on behind these doors…if she tells someone then my plans could be ruined. If my plans are ruined,” he stood and got in the guys face, “then your life ends.” “Please sir…we’ll keep looking…we will find her.” “Good and when you do…kill her…I don’t want any excuses about it. Now get to it!” he screamed. The soldier quickly exited the room almost running into Quistis as he did. Ignoring her he continued on down the hall and out of sight. Quistis watched him then looked into the room and saw Galadin watching her. She gasped, “I’m so sorry…this is not what it looks like.” “And just what might that be Miss Trepe?” he asked getting up and going to her. She stared up at him feeling intimidated, “I…I was afraid you might think…oh never mind.” “No of course I don’t think you were listening in, but I must ask what you were doing outside my door.” “Well…I found some clothes on my bed…I was wondering what they were for. They’re quite nice.” She told him. “Ahh…you found your dress…yes it’s for a party. One I’m holding as a peace proposal to all the cities here…Esthar included. You are invited…if you want to come. I would like for you to be there.” He looked down at her. “A party and you want me there? I thought I was here to teach you about junctioning? Why are you doing all this other for me?” “Junctioning…yes and might I add the training is going quite well. I never knew the process could be so…complicated, but as for why I do this other for you…it’s because, as I have stated before, you are my special guest. Never cross me and it will remain that way.” He ended and continued on down the hallway. Quistis reached out so to say something, but held it in as she turned and walked the opposite way he had gone.
Kiba had searched nearly every inch of Garden for Tsume when he finally found him out on the second floor balcony. He walked over to where he leaned and stood behind him for a moment before asking, “Where were you during the meeting?” “Here.” Tsume answered keeping his back to him. “You should have come…they need the information you have.” “I don’t have any information…you’re wrong to think so.” “Tsume…have you forgotten that their helping us benefits you also? You are one of those wolves trapped in case you have forgotten.” Kiba informed him. “I haven’t forgotten,” Tsume finally turned to him, “But what good is it when I have no information for them?” “You do though…the girl you brought in was mentioned. Who is she Tsume? How do you know her?” “I’m sure you saw her too…that day on the truck. She was the one in the back.” He turned away once again. Kiba stood in the same spot seeming to stare invisible holes into Tsume’s back, “I did…but how do you know her?” “Why do you care!?” he grew angry, “She has nothing to do with this anyway!” “I don’t know that she doesn’t…you’re the one that seems to know her. All I’m saying is if you do know something that she has told you…it would help if you would let everyone know. We’re getting no where fast.” “You know,” Tsume looked at him from over his shoulder, “we’re not getting back. Am I the only one that knows this?” “We will…we have to.” “But we won’t.” He faced Kiba again, “All your wishing for Paradise all the feelings…they’re slipping aren’t they? No matter how hard you try, you find yourself thinking of it less and less…” “Shut up! It’s not true!” he grew angry, “I may have lost the part of me that senses Paradise most, but I will never forget it…it still lives in me as much as it did. We will get ourselves back and we will continue on to Paradise…I don’t care if you believe it or not.” “I don’t believe it.” “Then I guess since you have given up…I have no business here with you.” He turned and left the balcony not believing what Tsume had just told him.
Just as dusk began to fall the Garden lifted off into the air leaving Deling City behind once more. Zell and Irvine had returned by now and Squall now set in the classroom looking over the magazines they had gotten. Rinoa stood looking over his shoulder as he seemed to get more and more agitated by the second. He finally threw the magazines from the desk and placed his face in his hands. Rinoa sighed and leaned in hugging him, “Squall…I know this is hard, but we can make it through.” “I’m trying to Rinoa… I really am, but these magazines only give basic information on junctioning and such…it doesn’t have anything really detailed in it. It’s just another lead that has given us a dead end. With no information…how are we supposed to help?” he said exasperated. “We’ll think of something. Did you go by and see that girl?” “I did, but she was still asleep when I went.” “Maybe you should try again.” “I will…but I have to take a break for a while. Wanna join me for something to drink in the cafeteria?” “Sure.” She smiled and walked with him when he stood up.
Down in the infirmary Kenzi’s eyes slowly opened and she looked around wondering where she was at. She slowly sat up on the bed as her head pounded and she placed her fingertips to her forehead trying to rub the pain away. She heard footsteps in the door and looked up at the smiling doctor. “Well, well…welcome back. Glad to see you awake…I’ll need to take your vitals.” She stated and left for a moment returning with her equipment. Kenzi only watched the doctor as she took her temperature, blood pressure, and listened to her heart. When she was done Dr. Kadowaki looked at her and asked, “So where are you from?” “Deling City.” She meekly answered, “How did I get here?” “One of our SeeD members and a visitor brought you in…they said you passed out on the street. They both seemed pretty concerned with you, but the one in black seemed the most. Do you know him?” “Yes…I do.” She smiled, “Where is he now?” “I’m sure he’s around…him and his friends are staying here for the time being.” “Hey! You’re awake!” said a voice from the door. Both women turned and looked seeing Zell standing there. He walked on in and looked at Kenzi, “I was wondering when you were going to wake up…so how are you feeling?” “My head hurts.” She informed him. “I’ll get you something for that.” Dr. Kadowaki told her as she stood and left the small room for a moment. Zell took a seat in the chair next to the bed, “You gave us quite a scare…what happened?” “I was coming from Deling City, but I had forgotten some money to stay in the hotel. I was too scared to sleep on the streets so I stayed awake for then entire night.” She told him. “Wow…I’d be tired too, so the guy that was with me…do you know him?” “Yes… I do.” “How?” “We met in Deling.” “Ahh…yeah, well…Squall wanted to know when you were awake…so I guess I should go let him know. Say…you want to walk with me to the cafeteria? Do you feel like it?” “Sure.” She stood up just as Dr. Kadowaki came back in with the medicine. “Not until you take this.” She handed Kenzi the medicine in a cup then a small cup of water. Kenzi swallowed the pills then tossed the containers in the trash. Dr. Kadowaki nodded saying, “If you have any questions or problems…be sure to let me know.” “I will.” she smiled. “Okay…you can go.” “Thanks Doc.” Zell waved at her then led Kenzi out the door and down the hall. As they came out into the open area she looked around, “Wow…it’s lovely here.” “Yeah…it is. So…what’s your name? I’m Zell.” He stopped and held his hand out to her. Taking it she shook it as she replied, “I’m Kenzi.” “Nice name,” he started walking again then turned off to the left, “The cafeteria is this way.” Kenzi continued on with him and into the large room as many eyes fell upon her. She felt embarrassed but tried to hide it as they walked on in and to the table Squall sat at. Rinoa noticed her with Zell and pointed out, “Someone’s awake.” Squall turned in his seat looking, “Well, well…it would seem so. How are you?” he greeted her as she came to the table. Kenzi once again looked upon an unfamiliar face but still smiled, “I’m much better…thank you.” “Good,” he offered her a seat, “feel up to answering some questions?” “I think so…what kind of questions?” she sat down. “Well, I know you have a friend here in Garden…Tsume?” “Tsume?” she thought but shook her head in bewilderment. “Kinda tall guy in black leather,” He described to her. “Oh…yeah…where is he?” “I’m not sure…since you got here…I haven’t seen him, but how do you know him?” “I met him in Deling City…I helped him away from the soldiers there.” “I see,” Squall raised his eyebrows, “Anything else?” “Ummm…no,” She grew nervous not wanting to say anything about Galadin and the presidential palace. Squall nodded, “Alright...thank you. Oh, and you might check his room. It’s a possibility he’s in there.” “Which room, where?” she asked. “I’ll show you.” Zell offered. “Thank you…that’s very kind.” “No problem.” He kinda blushed as he looked at her. Kenzi then waved to Squall and Rinoa as she followed Zell out the door.

Down in the dormitory Zell continued to lead Kenzi until he stopped before a door and pointed, “His room’s right here.” “Thank you…and thank you for helping me. I really appreciate it.” “No problem…glad I could help.” He grinned then waved to her as he left the dormitory. Kenzi clenched her hand shut then released it before raising it and knocking on the door. She stood for a moment until a shorter boy with brown hair answered, “Yes? Oh…hello…can I help you?” “Ummm…yes,” she said, “I was wondering if someone was here. He’s rather tall and wears black. Have you seen him?” “You must be talking about Tsume, but he’s not here. I’m his friend Toboe.” He smiled as he laughed. She couldn’t help but smile back at how friendly he was but asked, “Do you know where he is? I’d really like to speak with him.” “Not exactly sure, but you might try on the second floor. I found him up there on the balcony yesterday.” He told her wondering who she could be. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome!” he called to her as she turned to exit the building. Kenzi walked around Garden several times before seeing the stairs that led up to the elevator and climbed to it seeing the buttons before her. She pushed the one for the second floor and waited as she went up. Stepping off onto the walkway she continued down the hall until she came to an intersection and wondered which way to go. Studying it for a moment she noticed a door in the far back and went to it feeling the fresh air on her face as she opened it. Following another set of stairs up, she stepped onto the deck of the balcony and saw Tsume there looking out over the railing. Reaching up placing her hand to her chest she took one more step before saying in her soft voice, “Tsume?” Caught of guard he turned and became surprised when he saw her standing there. She bowed her head as he looked at her, “I didn’t mean to startle you.” “How did you know my name?” he asked her in a confused but calm voice. “I spoke with your friends…I’ve been trying to find you, then someone told me to look up here. I’m sorry if I’m bothering you…I just wanted to thank you…for helping me. I know you didn’t have to.” “No,” he shook his head, “I did. Since that day in the palace I’ve asked myself why I left you behind.” “You shouldn’t do that to yourself. I helped you because I wanted too, and for you to stay to help me would have meant you loosing your life. I couldn’t have that. I helped you because I wanted you to live…my life didn’t matter in that moment.” “But why,” he pleaded with her but sounded upset, “why would you do that for someone you don’t even know?” “I…I don’t know,” she lied, “I didn’t mean to upset you…I just wanted to thank you for helping me out…I know not everyone would. I realize I helped you out also, but of all the people I asked for help the one I wanted to see most of all was you.” “Huh?” he stared at her not wanting to believe what he thought was true. Kenzi stood with her head still down, looking at her feet unable to tell him directly what she was trying to say. Tsume fought to see her eyes, but couldn’t since she had them cast down, “What happened to you? How did you escape?” “I climbed out the window and ran from the soldiers. They chased me all the way across Deling until I was out of the city. I saw this ship and was going to try to get on it, but it was leaving at the same time I came out. I had no other choice but to take refuge in a forest far beyond the hill for the night. I was so scared…there in that tree as I heard the soldiers below looking for me…I just knew they were going to find me, and no matter how tired I was I knew I couldn’t fall asleep. Finally they went away, but my fear of them coming back just kept me up that much longer until I did doze off and I fell to the ground.” “You stayed in a tree all night?” “I had no choice…it was the only place I had to hide from them. If they had caught me and taken me back… I can guarantee I wouldn’t be here today. The next morning I came from the forest and into the town where I was found by you and Zell.” “What were you doing in that palace with that guy in the first place?” “It’s a long story…and something that isn’t easy for me to share.” “Don’t pull that on me!” he went over to her pulling her face up by her chin as he asked, “And why can’t you look at me?” “Please,” she felt warm tears rolling down her face, “I don’t want to see you angry with me. I didn’t mean to make you angry…I thought you’d like to hear thank you. I guess I was wrong!” she cried harder and pulled her face from his grasp as she ran through the door.
Tsume’s eyes grew wide as he realized he had broken her heart by his actions, and still failed to accept why it even meant anything to him. He remembered how sad her face had looked then thought of how he hadn’t even asked her name. He turned back toward the railing of the balcony and started to take his usual place staring out at the water, but knew all he would think of was never seeing her again so decided to go after her as he ran through the door also.
“Why do I even care? It’s not like she really matters to me…it’s just another obstacle to overcome in life.” Tsume thought to himself as he ran throughout Garden in search of Kenzi, “It’s just guilt on my part…for leaving her behind when she risked her life for me. Stupid girl…why would she do that? But then again,”he stopped and looked into the Quad entrance hearing low sobbing, “Maybe…it is more…” Slowly he walked into the area and saw a set of stairs ahead and Kenzi sitting on them her head resting in her arms as she cried. He frowned as he watched her then walked over standing at the top stating boastfully, “You know…if you really want to hide from someone you should find a better place.” Kenzi turned looking up the stairs at him and quickly wiped the tears from her eyes, “Why did you follow me?” Tsume only shrugged as he went down the stairs and took a seat across from her then looked her way, “Why did you run?” “I hate for people to see me cry…it’s embarrassing.” “I wouldn’t think to much about it…humans seem to do that a lot.” He told her. She only looked at him confused thinking that statement sounded weird but only brushed it off as something within her. Tsume watched her deciding to take the moment to ask, “So what’s your name?”
“Kenzi.” She softly said looking at him. He just watched her as she then let her eyes fall upon the scar on his chest and she thought of the same mark on the wolf in the palace. She reached out touching it, “This…how did you get it?” “I don’t wanna talk about it.” He stated removing her hand, “It’s just something that happened? Why do you care so much?” “The wolves…the ones in the palace…there’s one there with a scar just like that.” She laid her head on her arms looking across the large area, “I found it odd that both you and that wolf, one of the wolves you seek, have the same mark on your bodies…in the exact same spot.” “You saw them!?” he looked across at her. “Yes,” she nodded, “when I escaped…I found them in the basement of the palace. All four of them still in that cage…I was looking to free them, but before I could find a way the soldiers came back and caught me there. I had to run.” “What does this guy want with them, and don’t tell me it’s some fascination with exotic animals. I know it’s something more than that.” Kenzi only trembled as he asked her that and nodded, “It is more than a mere fascination, but to explain it would be very hard…it’s something not a lot are familiar with. It’s actually only the white one he has plans for… I don’t know what’s to become of the others.” “You do know,” he glared at her, “so how come you don’t tell someone!?” “Who!?” she yelled back, “Who am I supposed to tell? There’s no one around that can stop him. Once he’s completed his plan…it will be too late. Our world as we know it will come to an end, and a new master will reign.” “Not if you don’t let him,” Tsume told her reaching over taking her shoulders in his hands and shaking her, “I don’t think these people here are normal…I think they can help…despite how I doubt them.” He added now letting go of her. “SeeD…yes…I know of them. They are supposed to be good, but he’s so powerful I’m afraid to pull anyone into it. He is not human, and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants even if it means killing out everyone in this world.” “Who is he?” “His name is Galadin, and I know already he’s not from this world. He’s somehow managed to split space and time to open doors to other dimensions, and this is how he’s started this process. He’s found a world that was so accustomed to the way it was, and found a weak point in Deling City where he now sits succeeding in taking it over. The real president is gone…I don’t know where he’s at, but he is not at fault in this at all.” “World domination,” he scoffed, “why would anyone want such a thing. To have to control the world would be a big headache for me.” Kenzi only giggled at him causing him to look her way for a moment as a slight grin hinted his lips. Her eyes danced as she watched him but she frowned when his expression became more solemn and he looked away stating, “I am that wolf.”

“You…well I never would have guessed that, but it explains why you both share the scar.” “Yeah…but it still doesn’t explain how we got separated. I don’t see how that part of me can just be running around…without me,” he stopped realizing how confusing it sounded, “never mind.” “It’s alright…it’s not an easy thing to explain, but I get what you’re saying. I wish there was some way I could help you out more, but I can never show my face in that city again…I’m sure they’re looking for me.” “Maybe you can help…by telling that guy here what you know. He seems to be the leader of this place and he’s been helping us find answers to what’s happening. I think you could give him an idea of what he’s dealing with.” Tsume mentioned to her. “Maybe…but please I want you there. I’m afraid to tell them alone. What if they think I’m the enemy and want to hurt me? This is why I don’t want to tell anyone.” “Then why tell me?” “I don’t know,” she shook her head; “I just felt I could.” “I guess.” He turned to footsteps behind them and looked across the way at Squall standing there. Squall looked at the two of them on the steps then requested, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but its past curfew and everyone is supposed to be in their rooms now.” “It’s alright,” Tsume stood up, “we were just finishing up.” “Okay,” he nodded then looked at Kenzi, “And we still need to find you a room for the night. Come on and I’ll help you find something.” “Thank you.” Kenzi stood also then walked up the steps but stopped part way as she looked back at Tsume a moment before leaning in kissing him on the cheek. His eyes grew wide as her soft lips touched his face and his heart sped up sending chills down his spine. “Good night.” She told him as she then followed Squall out of the Quad. Tsume only watched her until she was gone trying to act unaffected by what had just happened, but found himself biting his clenched fist to help him contain his emotions as he walked back toward the dormitory. * * * * * That following morning Toboe was surprised to wake up to a knock on the door. Going over he rubbed his eyes then reached out opening the door gasping when he saw Selphie there. He blushed, “Good morning…I…I wasn’t expecting to see you here.” “I wasn’t really expecting to come by. It’s just on my way out I thought of yesterday and how you came over to talk to me. I really appreciated that…not many around here want to take out the time to let me show them the website I made on Sir Laguna.” “Oh, that…” he looked down, “I found it very interesting! He seems to have been to a lot of places around here. I’d sure like to meet him sometime.” “Yeah?” she looked at him, “Well listen…I was headed out to get some breakfast. Do you want to come with me?” “Of course, would I ever!” he shouted then looked back when Tsume cleared his throat, “Oh sorry Tsume.” He stepped out the door and pulled it too, “I would love to come to breakfast with you Selphie. You’re so kind and well…” he blushed, “I don’t know what else to say.” “It’s alright,” she smiled at him, “You don’t have to say anything.” Then together they walked off down the hallway and out of the building. Up on the second floor within the headmaster’s office Cid sat behind his desk once again but looked up when through his door Seifer came. Going over he sat down in the chair propping his feet up on the desk and looked over at Cid, “Morning headmaster.” “Seifer,” Cid returned, “Please remove your feet from my desk.” “Oh right,” he put them down, “sorry about that. So where have you been? You’ve been gone for a while.” “Yes…I was at home with Edea. I decided to take a short break.” He looked down at a paper writing something on it, “And Squall has already told me of your outburst.” “I kinda figured, but that’s not why I’m here.” He sat forward in the chair. “No? Then what can I help you with?” “Well…did Squall tell you of our new visitors we have here?” “Yes…he mentioned them.” “Did he tell you of the girl that Chicken-wuss and one of those new guys brought in?” he grinned. “Yes, but what are you getting at Seifer?” “Well,” he leaned in closer placing his arm on the desk as he looked close at Cid, “There have been several people ask that girl if she knows anything, and well she says she doesn’t, but I happen to know she’s hiding…a lot.” “Oh?” he continued to write, “And what makes you believe this way?” Seifer slammed his hand down on the desk causing Cid to look up at him, “I don’t think your listening to me headmaster. The information that girl has is vital to SeeD helping these people out. What I ask myself is why is she hiding it? She seems to only talk to one person and that’s the puss in the black. She seems to have a thing for him, but he knows what she does now, and I think someone should do some serious questioning to those two.” “You have my attention Seifer, but you need to watch your language.” “Language-smanguage…did it ever occur to anyone that this girl could be from the enemies side and was sent here to find out what we know?” he grew serious. “No…until you mention it I guess not, but still how do you know about this? No one else knows this information.” “Of course they wouldn’t…all this other was brought out in a private conversation between her and the,” he coughed, “new guy…last night in the Quad. They didn’t know I was there, but I’m sure if they had…the conversation would have been quite different.” “What did they talk about?” Cid asked becoming concerned. “Don’t ask me…ask them. I’m just telling you they know more than they’re saying.” He shrugged. “Very well…I’ll get in touch with Squall, but in the meantime…I want you to watch that temper of yours. We were very gracious to let you back in…I expect better behavior than what’s been shown.” “Will do.” He grinned again then stood up and turned his smile widening more as he walked out the door and to the elevator. Cid reached over to his intercom and picked it up then called, “Squall…I need you to report to my office a.s.a.p. Thank you.” A little later down in the cafeteria Kenzi sat by herself sipping at a cup of something warm when she turned to a tap on her shoulder. She looked back seeing Squall there and asked, “Yes?” “We need to talk…do you mind coming with me to the second floor?” “Of course not.” She smiled then got up following him up to the second floor. As she stepped into the door she grew nervous when she saw no one else there, but went on in. Squall pulled the door shut and motioned to one of the seats, “Please have a seat.” She sat down then looked up at him, “What’s this about?” “Well,” he leaned on the desk there, “last night when I asked you if there was anything else…I meant anything you thought we should know. I’m sure you know we’re helping out Tsume and his friends… I thought this might be reason enough for you to tell us what you know.” “I…I don’t understand.” She looked at him confused, “I told you I know nothing else.” “You told me that, but last night in the Quad…you told Tsume something different didn’t you?” he kept his eyes on her.

Over in a room just down the hallway from the one Squall was in Tsume stood looking at Kiba who waited for him to answer. Tsume only clicked his tongue and grew aggravated, “I thought I told you I didn’t know anything.” “Tsume…why are you lying for her, its known now she told you a lot, so why don’t you just share it with the rest of us?” “I’m not, and who told you she told me anything? We talked last night, but who said it had anything to do with why we’re here.” “I did.” Seifer said now standing in the doorway, “you and your little girlfriend didn’t know I was in the Quad last night. I heard everything that was said.” Tsume growled, “She’s not my girlfriend, and what right do you have listening to what we were saying?” “No right I guess, but what right does she have to lie to us…that tells me she must be here for no good. Otherwise she would have no problem telling what she knows.” “I don’t have to answer a damn thing to you!” “You do if I make you.” Seifer threatened as he walked over. Kiba stepped over in front of him, “No…it’s not going to be like this.” “And I guess you’re going to stop me?” he looked down at Kiba. “Only if I have to.”
Seifer only laughed at him but stopped when Squall said from behind, “Seifer…who asked you down here? The last thing we need is you here antagonizing them. If I understand right…you’re supposed to be in class.” “Hey,” he shrugged, “I was headed to class. I just thought I’d let him know I’m not scared of him. I did tell…and for good reason.” He glared back at Tsume then turned and walked out the door. Squall watched him until he was gone then stepped on in the door looking at Tsume, “She’s requested you to be there. We’re in the room just down the hall.” Tsume nodded to him then looked over at Kiba and walked out the door going to the other room. Kiba sighed and followed determined to find out what was going on. In the other room Kenzi still sat in the same spot she had before, but looked across the room at Tsume there and began, “There’s a big take over operation going on inside the presidential palace of Deling City. There’s a man there he calls himself Galadin, but he’s not human. He’s from another dimension.” “Another dimension,” Squall looked puzzled, “How did he manage to get here?” “He’s somehow gotten a power that can split space and time…and he came here in search of a world he could take over. I…I was working with him, but not now…when I escaped I was running from the life he had given me.” “Do you know how he has plans on taking over things? I mean what’s his main reason for taking the wolves and wanting to learn junctioning and such?” “It’s not all the wolves he wants…just the white one. As I told Tsume…I’m not sure what will become of the others but I’m almost certain they will be killed.” “And the white one,” Kiba asked growing on edge. “He wants the strength from the white wolf. He was searching for a strong spirit when he came across your world and found you. He watched you for a while before making a decision, but the day he did was the day you all were brought here. You’re wolf holds everything he was looking for in a spirit and now…he wants it for himself to make him more powerful and invincible. He will be unstoppable.” “And how is he planning on doing all of this? How can he get my wolf spirit into him?” “Junctioning,” Squall said aloud, “This is why he needed all that junctioning information. Tell me…did he take an instructor from Garden…she’s been missing for several days.” Kenzi nodded, “He does have her…she went when she received the letter from the president. She went thinking she could help out the government, but in reality it was to teach him what he needs to know to pull this off. She was fine as of the moment I left, but I don’t know what’s to become of her once he’s done using her. All I know is when he learns all he needs he’s going to extract the wolf spirit and junction it with himself, then start taking over…everything.” “How strong is he now?” Squall asked going over before her and kneeling down, “I know it’s a tough question to answer, but give me some idea of what we would be coming up against if we were to go into battle with him.” “I’ve heard of SeeD, what you people do, and I have read several articles about the six of you that went in to fight Sorceress Ultimecia. I know a little about it, and her strength is still a mystery to me, but I can assure you his power is ranked up there with hers if not surpassing hers. He’s very strong and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. This reason alone is reason enough to fear him.” “So he’s tough,” Squall stood back up, “with the right training and preparations though…I believe we can take him. Don’t get me wrong…I have my doubts, but a positive frame of mind is the best when confronting something like this. I learned that a long time ago. Is there anything else you can tell us to help out on preparing ourselves?” “There’s a party…tonight in the palace. Every leader from every city is going to be there. If someone could get in you might be able to find out more, but please beware…I’m not sure on this but I have a feeling this is the first step to starting his plan. I have a feeling whatever leaders show up…won’t be returning to their city.” “What is this guy trying to accomplish with all this?” Tsume asked disgusted. “Who knows,” Squall shrugged thinking of Laguna, “but I think I have a way to get someone in. I’ll have to get in touch with him though. One more question though…what does the General have to do with this?” “He’s helping Galadin out by providing him with soldiers and security. He’s been promised a part of the victory and a good life compared to the one the other people of the world are going to have. He will probably remain General over the army, but if the take over happens…it will be for the army of the entire world.” “This is sounding worse by the second. I have to let the others know so we can act quickly, but for now…I want you to stay here. With information like that floating around with you…he’s got to be looking for you. Everyone sit tight I’ll let you know what we decide as soon as we make a decision.” Kiba nodded watching Squall leave the room then looked at Tsume, “This is bad…we can’t let this happen.” “You’re just thinking of your own hide.” Tsume told him. “It’s not true! Don’t you pull that on me! Just remember…your wolf is in that cage too.” He glared then turned and stormed from the room.
As the day wore on all the members of SeeD were gathered in the second floor classroom and preparations had begun. All classes had ceased for the day while the faculty was busy, but the gossip hadn’t stopped since the announcement had been made. Inside the library three girls stood there talking among one another, “I heard there’s gonna be a war.” One girl with darker skin said. “That’s not true…but I did hear we were going to attack the presidential palace in Deling City. Who would have ever thought we’d be doing that?” another girl stated. “I hate to say anything,” one girl with a pigtail said, “their not giving out much information at the time…if they even give any at all. There’s a high possibility only SeeD members will be a part of it.” “Man and I hoped this might be a field exam of some sort. I think I’d be ready to take it.” The girls continued on gossiping through the day as several others around Garden did also.

Later that day the Ragnarok, carrying Squall, Zell, and Irvine, left the area headed to Esthar. It quickly flew across the continents until it reached a very large city of tremendous size and lowered into the center built for it. Squall climbed out the back immediately seeing the president there and went to where he stood greeting, “Laguna.” “Squall,” the man replied, “nice to see you all again. We’d hoped to see you much sooner, but I know you SeeD folks stay busy. So anyways you’re here on business so let’s get back to the palace and talk this matter over…lunch?” “Alright,” Squall nodded then followed him off to the palace. Inside the palace within the middle of the city six men now sat around a large table surrounded by many different kinds of food. Squall merely looked across the table at Laguna, “The situation is bad. Someone’s taken over the Deling City presidential palace, and has plans to take over the entire planet.” “The whole planet ‘eh, well I tell you that’s a new one to me since the Ultimecia thing. So who is this person?” “We don’t know much about him other than his assumed name, but we’ve been assured he’s not from this dimension. I don’t know exactly when this is supposed to start in full, but I have a feeling it’s going to be tonight at the party you were invited too.” Squall informed him. “Oh,” Laguna was shocked, “you know about that. Sorry it’s just it was supposed to be a secret. Do you think I should go?” “Yes… I want you to go but the thing to remember is to keep a close eye out on anything suspicious, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to take Ward or Kiros with you if possible. How many tickets did they give you?” “Three…why?” “I’ve been trying to think of someone from Garden I can send in with you, but it would have to be someone they don’t know of. I can’t say for sure, but I’m quite positive they have info on all of us that defeated Ultimecia, so I believe we are out of the question. However…there are others there that might be able to show up with you without ringing of suspicion.” “Maybe but whom?” “I’ve been thinking on it and Xu has crossed my mind many times. She’s good with tactics and is also a good fighter. She’s not one of the most known members of SeeD, but I think she’ll work perfect for what we’re planning. She’ll be posing as your date.” “My date!?” he choked, “Don’t you think people will think she’s too young?” “I wouldn’t worry too much about it…she looks a lot older than she is, and is very good at acting it also. It’s crucial to get her in so she can hear everything that goes on without making you seem too…pokey.” “Pokey, what does that mean?” Laguna asked looking at Squall, “I’ll have you know I’m very…pokey. Poking is my specialty…everyone knows that.” “Good then…poke all you like, but just don’t get yourself into trouble. We’d like to get you out of there alive too.” “Really,” Laguna’s eyes filled with tears, “You do care.” “Well… it’s not like that…I just really don’t want the blame for killing the president of Esthar.” Everyone at the table started to laugh as Laguna stood and looked down at Squall, “How could you say that to your father?” “Don’t press it Laguna…I know you’re glad I’m here.” “Yeah…I know.” He grinned then sat back down, “So when do I meet my date?” “We’ll meet you outside the city tonight. She can go in with you there.” “Alright then…I guess we’re all set. Now that business is out of the way…time to eat.” He grinned and began to pile his plate with stuff. Squall only shook his head then began to choose from the things in front of him.
As the evening drew closer Squall had already called the group of visitors in to let them know what was going on. He now stood with Xu outside the city awaiting Laguna to get there. After a large ship similar to the Ragnarok sat down on the plains, Laguna approached them being all smiles, “Evening…so where’s my date?”
“She’s right here.” Squall told him pointing to Xu in a lovely evening gown standing beside him. Laguna smiled at her and nodded, “You look very lovely.” “Thank you.” She returned his smile, “I understood it was a formal party.”
“Yes…that’s right.” “Good.”
“Alright,” Squall broke in, “You two just go in there and act natural. Xu I’ve already talked to you about this, but Laguna…don’t go in there asking too many questions in the beginning. Kinda mingle with the others and get comfortable before asking anything.”
“Alright…I can do that, but watch out for anything strange right?”
“Yeah.” He nodded then pulled his sleeve back checking the time, “You two better go…we’ll be on standby just in case you need a quick out. We’re not going anywhere so if you have to run then do so.”
“We got you Squall.” Xu told him. “Alright then…get going.” He watched them go into the city then headed back to Garden hoping the plan would go well and get them the information they needed.
Inside the palace Quistis stood in her room before a large mirror, looking at herself in the dress that had been left on the bed. It was a simple red dress that stopped just above the knee and lay across her chest perfectly even without the aid of straps. She sighed loving how it looked on her, but also wondered if her friends were even looking for her. Reaching up she slid the silk shawl from the mirror and placed it over her shoulders smiling at how well the black went with the red. She turned once in a full circle but jumped when she came around noticing Galadin in the mirror. She gasped now facing him, “I had no idea you were standing there.”
“I’m sorry I frightened you, but if it’s any consolation…I was only admiring you. You look very lovely in that dress. Do you like it?” he asked coming in to the edge of the bed. Quistis merely nodded watching him, seeing the full suit he now wore, and thinking how handsome he looked in it, as she looked at her feet, “Yes…it’s very lovely, and it fits me so well.”
“I agree…I picked it out myself.”
“Really?” she stared at him, “I didn’t know.”
“I didn’t expect you too but,” he walked to where she stood and went behind her, “I have something else for you…that should make it just perfect. Though perfection isn’t hard for you.” He whispered as he leaned in pulling the shawl down a little and placing a shining necklace on her neck with a small beautiful black pendant hanging from the end. He then reached around taking her left hand in his right as he whispered once more in her ear, “Perfect,” Then turned her toward the mirror. Quistis gasped as she looked in the mirror at the necklace, “Oh my…it’s lovely. How could you ever get something like this for me?”
“I got it because I thought it suited you, and I want my date to be the most stunning woman there. Now my dear…you are.” He looked over her shoulder in the mirror at her, his eyes meeting hers. Quistis sighed as her eyes locked on his but closed them, a shiver running down her spine, as he leaned in barely pressing his lips to her neck. She trembled as his lips brushed against her skin feeling a sensation she couldn’t ignore as she turned to face him. Looking up into his eyes she felt a positive heaviness in the atmosphere as she leaned in to kiss him. Reaching out Galadin placed his hand to her face but slid his thumb between her mouth and his. Leaning around he kissed her face beside her ear as he whispered; “Not yet my darling…we have a party to attend and many guests await our arrival, so we must go.”
“Yes,” she sighed in agreement wondering what had come over her but reached out taking his arm as the two of them walked out the door.

Down in a large ballroom within the palace many guests mingled and talked about what the proposal could be that was to be presented. Xu and Laguna had already entered, along with Ward, and found a place to sit. Laguna had returned from one of several tables in the room bringing with him two drinks as he sat one down in front of Xu. She looked up at him and smiled, “Why…thank you…this is a lovely party.”
“Yeah…too bad were here on business.” He winked at her as he took his seat once again. Just as he had seated himself and taken one drink from his glass everyone turned to the entrance in the room as Galadin and Quistis came in. Laguna watched closely and then turned to Xu who also stared. A shocked look was on her face as she looked toward Laguna and they both said in unison, “Quistis.”
They continued to watch as Galadin greeted several people on his way to the front of the room, Quistis staying close. Xu leaned in toward Laguna, “What do you think of this? She certainly doesn’t look like she’s having a bad time.” “I don’t know,” he shrugged and whispered back, “maybe she’s being forced to do it.” “Squall said he was pretty sure she is being made to teach him…maybe this comes along with it.” She looked back to the front as Galadin stepped up behind a podium and tapped the microphone before stating, “Ladies and gentleman…I’m glad you could all come this evening…”
As the stars began to twinkle about and the sky became dark, Kenzi sat in her room looking through a magazine, but her thoughts were far from the article she looked at. She thought of Tsume and sighed knowing no matter what she did it wasn’t going to help to get him from her mind. She closed the magazine and shoved it to the middle of the table then stood up headed from the room and out of the dormitory. She contemplated going to the second floor balcony to see if he was there, but as she stood at the crossroads from the dormitory she took a right and headed to the Quad instead. With many things heavy on her heart the feeling was very strong to see him, but she decided not to press it too much as she walked into the Quad headed down the steps.
Taking a seat on one of the benches there she sighed propping her chin in her hands as she stared at her feet. Many thoughts ran through her head as she sat there but she looked up, her concentration broken, when two feet appeared in front of her. She gasped when she saw Seifer before her and quickly stood. He took a step back and raised his hands passively, “Whoa…slow down there…I wasn’t gonna jump on you or anything.” Kenzi only looked up at him a worried expression on her face, “Then what?” “You’re too jumpy…I was just going to come and tell you I’m glad you came out with the truth…it helped us out a lot. It helped by getting me out of class for a while, and well it helped the SeeD members out too.” “I know…that’s why I decided to tell. I wanted to help out Tsume and his friends.” She lowered her head. “Tsume, huh…that must be his name. I didn’t know his name I just called him puss, but if you want you can call me Seifer.” He held his hand out to her. Though hesitant she reached out and took his hand shaking it, “I’m Kenzi.” “Nice name…so you’re from Deling right?” “Yeah…but what may I ask is this about?” “Just small talk,” he took a seat on the bench and leaned back, “I figured if you’re gonna be here for a while…I might as well get to know you. I knew you weren’t a bad girl.” She stared at him slightly angry, “What would make you think I was bad? I’ve done nothing to anyone.” “I know, but well…that’s kinda what had crossed my mind when you wouldn’t tell anyone what you knew.” He closed his eyes. “Yes…I don’t appreciate you eavesdropping on my conversations.” “Hey,” he sat up and looked at her, “I wasn’t eavesdropping…I was here when you came in here crying, which I know was because of him, and I didn’t see any reason to disturb such a nice conversation. I could have, but I thought you needed to get it out so I stayed behind that tree.” He pointed across the room. “What’s your real reason for coming here? I’m sure it wasn’t to sit and chit-chat about this.” She asked crossing her arms. “Well,” he stood up, “You’re right. It wasn’t just to chit-chat…I actually thought you were kinda cute and wondered what kind of a chance I’d have to let you get to know me.” She gasped quickly looking at her feet to hide the blush she felt, “Oh my…I wasn’t expecting anything like that. I’m sorry…I can’t.” “Oh come on…I’m not that bad. Sure I do things at times that seem harsh but I’m not really a bad guy, and I have feelings just like everybody else.” “I know that,” she meekly replied, “it’s just well…my heart lies somewhere else. I’d be leading you on to let you believe I have feelings for you. I’m sorry.” Seifer laughed slightly then looked at her, “You know…I believe you have to be the first girl to ever tell me that, but hey…its honesty...that’s a good quality. Listen…I know you have feelings for what’s his face so just take my advice and tell him. I think you’ll be more surprised than you think. Later.” He nodded to her then walked from the Quad leaving her standing there alone.

I'm glad people are reading it. That's what I posted it for, and yes I realize it's long but a story like this I just don't feel could be expressed in a few pages. I tried to keep the characters original within the story but at the same time make them fit in the idea. It turned out quite long, but I think it's all good.

Kenzi only sighed as she stated lowly, “But that’s easier said than done,” Then started further into the back until she came around a bend headed toward another balcony there. As the balcony came into view she was once again taken by surprise when she saw Tsume standing there looking out. Her heart sped up as she watched him for a moment trying to decide if she should speak, but thought better of it and turned to leave. She stopped in mid track when from behind her she heard him ask, “Leaving so soon?” “I,” she spun back to face him, “I just didn’t want to bother you.” “And what makes you think that?” he now faced her. “I don’t know…you just seem to like your privacy.” She stated allowing her eyes to fall from his gaze. He nodded then walked to where she stood, “I do…but there are times I like to have company also.” “Alright.” She looked up and managed a smile then joined him back at the rail. She breathed deep as she folded her arms over one another and placed them on the rail before her and looked out at the water. Tsume also watched the water below cutting his eyes in her direction as a question arose in his mind. He fully looked at her, “You know…I was just wondering since this afternoon. Why did you work for that guy? Did he always treat you that way?” Kenzi looked his way as her hair blew lightly in the breeze, “No…not always. When I first met him he was really good to me, but I was blind to how his ways were. He was so nice to me…to the point I ended up falling in love with him.” Tsume raised an eyebrow, “Are you serious?” “I’m afraid so…he had taken me in off the streets and made me a home there in the presidential palace. It wasn’t until later he actually told me of his plans to take it over, but even at that point I was willing to go along with what he requested. I never realized the seriousness of the matter… I just did it really because my feelings for him were so strong. He had led me on to believe he cared for me also by doing little things, but there was one day I’ll never forget that made me realize he didn’t.” “What?” he asked his expression growing serious. “It was the day he made a request of me that would change my life forever…the day he took away my wolf spirit.” She cast her eyes away from him and back to the water. Tsume stopped breathing momentarily and he blinked, “What do you mean?” “Every since I was small I had this ability…an ability that allowed me to take the form of a wolf, but on the other hand I could also be human. The choice was mine on what I wanted to be, but I chose to be human because I knew there were no others around like me. I rarely took my wolf form besides when I was a child…I did it more as a fascination thing, but as I grew I realized how different I was and remained human. I knew what I had was precious, but it didn’t stop me from allowing him to test his theory on me. He performed the same extraction on me he did on you and your friends leaving me with only a human side.” “Why would you give up something like that?” he scowled. “I…I’m not sure. In the moment I knew him I thought all I wanted was to be human forever in hopes we could be together, but I never dreamed it would have been such a huge loss. However…it failed to provide him with what he had wanted so he had to continue his search for another and left me feeling cold and lonely. I never saw my wolf spirit again, and I quickly became a servant to him.” “That just pisses me off.” He said appalled now looking away. “I’m sorry…if I had known I never would have agreed to it, but all I wanted was to be loved…I would have given up anything.” She breathed a quivering breath, “It was the same, the day I saw you from that truck.” “What?” he stood up straight now feeling a shiver. Kenzi only kept her eyes on the water unable to look at him now. Tsume watched her a moment wondering what it was about this girl then leaned back on the rail. Feeling unable to speak now he tried to think of something to say but drew a blank aside from one thing. He looked toward her, “I don’t know if it’s this whole being human thing, but I feel a little different about things now. I haven’t lost all of my wolf instinct, but it is distant and there is a big difference.” “Yes,” she nodded, “its human nature.” “Human nature?” “Yeah…believe it or not humans also have instinct its just most of them these days choose not to use it. It’s like if they do use it they are a strange person, or it makes them stand out from the crowd. Not all of them are like this, and the few that do use it do stand out…I’m sure you’ve seen some of them.” Tsume only nodded slightly, “I have... you’re one of them.” Kenzi looked his way as her heart fluttered but grew steadily in pace as he glanced her way once again. He sighed as though giving up and reached over grasping her hand in his and stepped back from the balcony pulling her along with him. Kenzi shuddered as the warmth of his hand engulfed her own, and all the thoughts in her head dispersed when he pulled her close to him looking down at her. Unable to look at him she tilted her head down to hide her eyes, but he reached down taking her chin in his fingers and lifted bringing her eyes to his. “Why can’t you look at me…Kenzi?” he asked her softly. She swallowed hard as she looked into his golden eyes and only shook her head unable to answer. Reaching over he pushed some loose hair behind her ear, “I tried to deny it…so hard, I didn’t want to let my pride down and admit I was falling for a human but even I have to confess I have feelings for you. I began to feel like I was going to burst if I didn’t tell you something…now you stand here unable to even look at me.” She shivered now still looking up at him, but became so over come with emotion the only thing she felt able to do was lean into him wrapping her arms around his neck as she sobbed. Unsure of how to react, Tsume only let his hands fall to her waist as he held to her and after a moment of silence he asked, “Kenzi…what happened?” She turned her head on his shoulder looking out and said lowly, “I thought you hated me.” “No,” he sighed, “I don’t hate you. Now look at me.” He requested as he once again brought her around to look at him. She gazed up at him again as he reached up wiping away a staggering tear then closed his eyes and moved his face slowly closer to hers until his lips pressed firmly to her mouth. Kenzi’s eyes grew large but she then closed them as a few more tears streamed down her face. Grasping his jacket in her hands she opened her mouth allowing him to kiss her fully and to the point she thought she was going to pass out from the rush of emotions. Slowly their mouths parted as Tsume took a deep breath and opened his eyes looking down at her once again. He saw she had started crying again then reached up wiping away the tears that fell before leaning in to kiss her once again beneath the twinkling sky.

The night wore on as over in Deling City the party within the presidential palace had picked up tremendously. Galadin had made his peace proposal to those there and now mingled with the guests. Quistis stood beside him still thinking back to the moment in the bedroom, and wondered now what had come over her. She stared down into her untouched glass of wine confused by everything that was happening and unsure of her feelings toward the man beside her. She glanced up at him as her heart fluttered but at the same time she felt a doubt inside that made her uncertain if what was happening was natural. He glanced down at her causing her thoughts to break as he stated, “Will you join me…in a dance?” he held his hand out to her. She smiled as she nodded and set the drink down then took a place on the floor with him, shuttering as his hands touched her skin. Together they moved about as the uncontrollable feeling once again overtook her and she lost track of her senses as had happened before. From across the room Xu and Laguna watched the two of them as Laguna sighed, “I dunno…if you ask me it kinda does look like she’s enjoying herself. I mean I’m not saying she’s not being forced into this, but perhaps…she is having a little fun.” Xu only looked at him, “How could you think something like that? Quistis is the most professional teenager in all of Garden…I,” she stopped looking up at them also, “I guess it does look like she’s rather enjoying herself.” “I don’t know…I wish there was someway we could talk to her and find out what’s going on. Maybe I could cause a distraction.” He stood up but Xu pulled him back down, “Don’t…Squall told us to stay low and if you go causing some kind of a ruckus just so we can talk to Quistis…they’ll know something is up for sure.” “Well then what?” “I say considering you are the president of Esthar…he’ll be over here to talk to you before too long. He’s been making the rounds of the place and I can guarantee your turn is coming…so just sit back and relax.” She told him. “Geez…you make it sound kinda scary.” He looked at her. “Who’s to say there isn’t reason to be scared…you don’t know what his plans are.” “You’re not making me feel very comfortable…” “Sorry…” she glanced back to the floor and then hit Laguna on the arm once to get his attention as she saw Quistis and Galadin coming their way. She cleared her throat and grumbled lowly, “Act natural.” He only nodded then stood from the table holding his hand out, “Pleased to meet you sir, and might I add this party is mighty fine.” “Thank you…I’ve heard much about you Laguna Loire…I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.” He reached out taking his hand. Laguna nodded, “Thank you very much…it’s been a lot different since Esthar came out of hiding, but I myself think it’s been good for the city.” “Yes…I agree…very much.” He grinned. Quistis’s mind wandered off again as they talked until she looked past him and saw Xu at the table and squeaked, “Xu! What are you doing here?” “Quistis!?” she quickly stood trying to stay calm, “I…I’m Mister Loire’s date. He didn’t want to come alone and well…here I am. So…what are you doing here?” “Business.” She nodded but quickly hushed when Galadin turned back to them glaring at Xu. Xu caught the glance and looked at Quistis wanting to know more as she wondered what to do to get Galadin distracted. Before she could have another thought Laguna continued to ramble on as he threw his arm around Galadin’s shoulders and led him off, “You know….that peace proposal was just an awesome idea…” “Quistis,” Xu quickly turned to her, “What is going on?” “There isn’t enough time to explain it all,” she told her, “something is going down tonight, but I don’t know what. This party…the peace proposal…it’s all bogus.” She whispered. “But why…why is he keeping you?” “I…” she looked across the room at Galadin growing upset with Laguna then back at Xu, “I don’t know. He wants me to teach him…” “Junctioning,” Galadin seemed to appear from nowhere and shoved Xu out of the way, “Seems you ladies have had a little too much time to talk. I don’t like dirty little secrets…especially coming from a spy.” He glared at Xu. “Please…Quistis is my friend…I only wanted to say hello.” She tried to lie. “Don’t think you can fool me…I know you come from Garden and why, but my plans are none of your business!” he yelled. Everyone in the room turned looking that way the room seeing motionless now compared to how it had been. He glanced back over his shoulder and motioned to a soldier then took Quistis’s hand in his and pulled her to him. He held to her and laid her back across his arm, “Now is the time Miss Trepe.” “Time?” she stared up at him, “Time for what?” Without another word he leaned into her pressing his mouth to hers causing her to jump but soon she lay passed out in his arms. He picked her up passing her to the soldier, “Take her to her room…make sure she’s not harmed.” “Yes sir,” he nodded and exited the room with Quistis. Xu stood by confused by all that was going on, but looked back at Galadin, “You! What did you do to Quistis!?” “Don’t question me!” he turned on her, “you will pay for your snooping!” “We gotta go!” Laguna hollered at her grabbing her arm rushing toward the door. Just as they reached the exit the doors slammed shut trapping them and everyone else in the room. Screams were heard throughout the room as the lights dimmed leaving things covered in a creepy darkness. Xu turned back now watching him as before their eyes his attire changed from the suit to a black outfit and a cape. He glared their way as he started toward them, “I’ll start with you two meddlers.” He outreached his hand to them stopping in his tracks as Xu was lifted off the ground and thrown into the wall to her right. Laguna’s eyes grew wide as he watched but he grew angry and called out to Ward across the room. The large man made his way to Laguna and from beneath the long robe he wore he revealed two weapons. Laguna caught the machine gun that was thrown to him as Ward took the large anchor in his hand and took a stance before Galadin. Galadin merely placed his hand back to his side grinning across the room at the two of them, “Don’t be so foolish to believe your insignificant weapons can stop me…for I am not mortal.” “Maybe,” Laguna growled, “But I’m willing to try.” He jumped forward firing a round of shots at him. Galadin merely allowed the bullets to hit him and placed his hand up allowing some of them to pass into it then dropped eight of them to the floor. Laguna’s eyes grew round and he passed a glance toward Ward where the large man only looked back at him. Ward motioned with his hand to Xu then slammed the end of the anchor onto the floor and pulled it back tossing it at Galadin. Laguna nodded getting what Ward was telling him and rushed to where Xu sat unconscious. He picked her up from the floor and looked back to the door wondering how he might get it open when by his own surprise he watched Ward get smashed through the door by his very own weapon. The crashing sound made the people scream again as they all panicked and tried to run for the door. Galadin turned to them all and grinned, “Leaving so soon….the party’s just beginning.” He shoved both hands toward the ceiling palm up and began to chant a series of strange words as power built within his grasp. The power continued to grow as it began to cover the entire room blocking the way of the other guests as it continued to spread consuming the whole room. Laguna stood and quickly dashed out the door with Xu stopping for a moment to help Ward up, but found him unconscious also. He looked down at his large friend then back at Xu knowing he couldn’t take them both but tried despite the fact by grasping Ward’s hand in his. Xu lifted her head and moaned now looking at him, “Laguna…what are you doing?” “Xu! Can you walk!?” “Yeah…I think so.” She nodded. He gently sat her down helping her get steady on her feet, “You have to get out of here…something bad is about to happen!” “What!?” she looked back toward the room at the power now spreading into the hallway, “But what about you!?” “Don’t worry about me! Just go! I can’t leave him behind!” “No! I can’t just leave you, and you can’t get him by yourself!” “Just go,” he turned taking her shoulders in his hands, “Squall needs the information you have,” he watched the power come closer, “you have to go back to Garden now…at least one of us will make it out.” “But…how…” “No buts! Go Xu!” A worried expression still on her face she gave a small nod then turned and ran off down the hallway and out of sight. Laguna turned back to Ward now knowing he wouldn’t make it in time, but continued to pull at his friend’s motionless body until he too had been engulfed in the power source. Outside Xu ran to the sidewalk outside the gate and turned looking back at the house seeing the entire left half of the house covered by a strange darkness that seemed to be sucking all the life out of anything it touched. Her heart stopped at the thought of Laguna and Ward inside as she reached up touching her chest then took off down the sidewalk tears streaming down her face.

Standing beside the directory in Garden Squall paced the area concerned for those inside the palace. Though it was getting late and most of Garden was resting he still stood waiting for Xu, Laguna and Ward to return. He sighed feeling uneasy as an uncontrollable frustration seemed to be growing within him. He stopped looking back at the directory and was drawing his fist back to punch it when he heard Rinoa’s soft voice from behind him, “Squall? What’s wrong?” He stopped in mid punch and turned cracking his knuckles, “Rinoa…what are you doing up?” “Don’t tell me I have to sleep Squall…knowing you’re up here worrying like this. It’s impossible to sleep. I’d like to be of some help if possible.” “Rinoa,” he leaned back on the directory, “What if I made a mistake sending them in there? I didn’t know that guy’s plans and I sent them in there anyway…how can I deal with it if something was to happen to any of them?” “But Squall,” she walked over leaning down to look him in the face, “I thought that’s why you sent them in there…is because we know nothing. The information they will return with is vital to us battling this guy.” “No,” he stood and looked at her, “not us. I’m not letting you do it.” “What?” she looked up at him, “What do you mean? Squall… I want to fight beside you guys…it’s where I belong.” “But I don’t want you too. Rinoa…that guy gives me shivers up my spine and I’ve never even met him…it’s bad and I know it. I can’t bear it if something were to happen to you in the heat of battle.” “This sounds so familiar Squall Leonhart,” she stood now looking at him and took his shoulders standing him up to look at her, “But you can’t hold me back like that. I love you Squall and I will be there during this. Granted we never know how it’s going to turn out, but if something was to happen to you and I’m not there…it will crush me.” “I know,” he took her in his arms,” I know…I’m just on edge is all. Something in the air has gotten me on edge, and it bothers me because I know it’s what’s taking place in that city.” He looked back toward the entrance of Garden. Rinoa turned her head and looked also when they both saw Xu running up the walkway toward them. Squall rushed out to meet her as she collapsed on the floor, her shoes missing. He looked at Rinoa who had joined them, “Something’s not right.” “Xu,” Rinoa shook her, “Xu what happened?” “Laguna…he’s still in there. I tried to get him to come, but he wouldn’t.” she cried. Squall stood up leaving her to Rinoa and looked toward the entrance stepping out but stopped when Xu reached up placing her hand on his leg, “No…don’t go.” “What happened over there?” he looked down at her keeping one foot forward. “A strange power overtook everything…the trees…died right before my very eyes. Just like a passing season the leaves fell from the branches only I know they died! And Laguna and Ward were right in the middle of it!” she cried harder. Rinoa’s eyes grew scared as she looked up at Squall, “Its happening.” “No!” he screamed aloud and turned running to the directory hitting it repeatedly, “This can’t be!” Rinoa helped Xu up and went to where he stood breathing heavily his hands rested on the directory. She reached out and touched his shoulder, “Squall…this looks bad, but sometimes things are different from what they seem.” “No!” he turned to her, “You don’t understand! It’s my fault this happened!” “No,” she tried to comfort him, “it was something that couldn’t be helped.” “It could have been if I hadn’t been so stupid…I sent my own father in there knowing something was going to happen and now look…” he fell back into the directory, “he’s…dead.” From the right Dr. Kadowaki stepped out into the light, “You shouldn’t blame yourself you know. Rinoa’s right…it couldn’t be helped. I know you feel it is, but in reality it’s not.” She went over taking Xu’s side, “I’m going to take her to the infirmary and check her over…in the meantime you should decide what’s going to be done about this.” Squall only leaned on the board his hands covering his face as he thought of what Xu had just told them, and tried to come to terms with it. Rinoa went over taking his hands in hers and pulled them down, “Squall…I wish there was something I could say…but I don’t know what.” “Don’t say anything,” he turned from her, “just go and get some rest. Tomorrow…early…we devise a plan to get us in that presidential palace. We’ll attack it full force if we have to, but I will face this bastard soon, or die trying.” “But Squall…he seems so powerful…” “I know but we can’t wait a moment more. His power will only grow if he is successful in his junctioning. Tomorrow…early.” He told her and took a step but stopped looking back over his shoulder at her, “I’m sorry Rinoa.” She only nodded as she watched him go and tears fell from her eyes as she hurt for him, but without hesitation she turned going the opposite direction headed back to the dormitory. * * * * * That following morning as everyone rose from bed the talk was going around about the notices that had been posted everywhere the night before. Within the cafeteria the sounds of many voices filled the air as all the SeeD trainee’s talked about what was going on. Tsume stepped into the cafeteria and looked around as he became disgusted, “This is pathetic…how is anyone supposed to get anything in there?” he asked himself as he looked into the packed room. He turned to a tap on his shoulder and looked down at a girl as she requested, “Excuse me…I need through.” He stepped aside allowing her in the door way and watched her go over to one of the crowded tables joining in on the noise. He rolled his eyes and shook his head turning from the door as he left the area to find some peace. As he walked down the walkway he looked up noticing Toboe, seeming very amused by something, coming his way and stopped watching him. Toboe giggled and laughed twirling something out from his hand as he approached Tsume. He looked up at him, “Good morning Tsume.” “Yeah…right,” he grunted still angry about the cafeteria but took notice of the thing Toboe held, “Where did you get that?” “Selphie gave it to me…it’s a yo-yo, and she showed me how to use it and everything.” He grinned. “A yo-yo,” Tsume returned the grin, “so how do you plan on using that thing when you get your paws back?” Toboe’s face became expressionless as he looked down at the thing in his hand, “Gee,” he shrugged, “I guess I never really gave it any thought. I guess I won’t, but I can enjoy it while I can, right?” “I guess.” His grin faded as a thought crossed his mind. Toboe stared up at him catching the look in his eyes asking, “Is everything alright Tsume?” “Haven’t you noticed yet that everything isn’t alright?” he retorted. “You don’t have to be so mean…it just seemed like something was bothering you.” “Mean…I…” he stopped in mid sentence when his head snapped to an image in his peripheral vision and he stared at Kenzi there. His breath caught in his throat for a split second as he looked at her and memories of the previous night came to his mind causing him to shiver. Smiling shyly, she walked his way as Toboe followed his gaze seeing her there then cast a glance up at his friend and asked, “Oh wow…that’s the girl that came to the door looking for you that one night.” “I know.” Tsume simply stated still looking at her. Toboe smiled at how much Tsume was taken by her and asked, “So who is she? She’s really pretty.” “Kenzi.” He stated as she now stood before him offering him a good morning and he returned, “Good morning.” “Tsume…I’m sorry to bother you so early, but I was just wondering something.” “You don’t have to apologize…what is it?” “Well…I took notice of the cafeteria and how it was so I just ordered something and had it brought to my room. They brought quite a bit and well,” she blushed, “I was thinking maybe you could join me.” “Me?” he cast his glance to the side at Toboe who stood there bobbing his head. Kenzi nodded awaiting his answer as he seemed distracted now, but quickly he gathered his thoughts and looked back at her nodding once. Toboe grinned from ear to ear and let out a small laugh as Kenzi smiled at Tsume, but quickly dropped the grin when Tsume glared at him. Kenzi now looked over at Toboe and suggested, “Perhaps you could join us too.” “Oh wow…that’d be great.” He smiled. Tsume sighed but felt a weakness overcome him when she reached out taking his hand gently, pulling him in the direction of the dormitory. Toboe followed behind them still playing with the yo-yo as he walked.
