Once inside she made her way over and took a seat on the bed. Tsume joined her seeing sadness in her eyes causing him to ask, “Is everything alright Kenzi?”
“No,” she shook her head, “when I look at you I still feel so much. My mind is in a state of confusion telling me to touch you, but then at the same time it tells me it’s not possible. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but…could you remain in your wolf form?” Without hesitation he appeared as a wolf then watched as she reached up on the shelf taking the book down. She opened it flipping through the pages stopping on one as she looked back at him, “Squall brought me this book…it holds your passage home. He asked me to help you and your friends get back to your world…I told him I would.”
“You know how?”
“Yes…Galadin showed me a lot about this book. I know more than just the one spell, but the only one that’s important is the one that will help you home.”
“I don’t even know why we have to go back…that place is a dump.” He told her.
“You do…have to go back…it’s vital to your world. This is something I haven’t mentioned before, but right now your world is in a time lapse. Time has literally stopped due to you all being taken from it. Nothing is moving right now, and it will never move again until you are returned to the place you were when you left off.”
“Then why go back? If it’s stopped then no one will know the difference anyway.”
“It’s not that simple,” she explained, “if the time remains stopped for too long then there is a chance of an error in time. Your world will be destroyed, but also there is a chance of the world in which you reside being mixed in also…resulting in both the worlds’ destruction.”
“So when?”
“Tomorrow…he said tomorrow when Toboe and Hige are back to normal. That’s when I will send you all home. I will never see you again Tsume…” a tear made it from her eye. He leaned in licking it from her face unsure of what to do to console her. She picked the book up and placed it back on the shelf then lay back on the bed, “I feel tired…since I woke up in the infirmary…this fatigue has been coming and going.”
“You just need rest.” Tsume told her scooting in next to her and laying his head on her arm. Kenzi looked down at him and smiled, “I wish it were that simple.”
“What do you mean?” he stared confused.
“Back in Esthar…after Galadin extracted your soul…he bit me.” She reached up rubbing the spot on her neck, “He was attempting to remove my life and at the same time resurrect me with his power so I would be immortal also.”
“I don’t understand Kenzi,” Tsume grew concerned, “he didn’t succeed though…did he?”
“No…he didn’t…you stopped him when you reclaimed your wolf spirit, but a part of his power now lives within me. I can feel it writhing beneath my skin and inside my soul, and I can tell that even now no matter where he’s at…he’s using it to his advantage.”
“What do you mean!?” Tsume sat up shocked.
“Tsume,” she looked over at him and placed her hand on him, “I’m really going to miss you. I wish so much, things could have worked out for us…I could have loved you for an eternity.”
“Don’t talk like that…it’s not over yet Kenzi. We still have tonight.” He leaned in cleaning the tears that now flooded her face. His heart broke at her state and he watched as she only closed her eyes.
“Kenzi!” he grew upset waiting for a response, but calmed himself when he saw her breathing lightly. Unsure of how to react to what she had said he moved in closer to her laying his head across her stomach feeling her breathing, and found himself quickly drifting off to sleep.
As the sun rose high in the sky that following morning Squall and a group of two boarded the Ragnarok headed to Esthar. The large ship took off into the sky and made its way to the air station there and landed. The three people made their way to the lab on one side of the city and entered finding the small doctor within. Squall approached him, “So…how did it go?”
“It went very well.” Dr. Odine replied, “It was not a hard task to put them back together. Dey are very interesting indeed…I would have liked to study them more, but you said zat iz all I could do.”
“That’s right, so where are they?”
“I will git them.” He replied and exited into another room soon returning with Hige and Toboe. Toboe came out giggling and laughing as he jumped about, “Wow! This feels great!”
“Yeah,” Hige agreed, “I never thought it could feel so good to be back to my old self.”
“I think ze Doctor needs a little thank you.” Doctor Odine looked at them. They both looked at him and nodded as they thanked him. Squall reached into his pocket and pulled out some Gil offering it to the little man. He held his hand up, “No…I cannot accept it. I did it in ze name of science.”
“Alright…can’t say I didn’t offer though.” Squall told him.
“I was not going to say zat.”
“I know.” Squall chuckled then looked at Hige and Toboe, “Come on you guys…let’s get back to Garden. We have you a ride home also.”
“Really!?” Toboe joined them as they went out the door, Hige right behind him. As they walked from the laboratory Squall looked down the walkway at a figure coming their way and noticed it was Kiros. He stopped now holding up as the tall man approached him, “Squall…I’ve been trying to reach you. The Garden said you were here at the lab, so I hurried over.”
“Yeah…what is it?”
“I got a call from the General in Deling City…he said he had Laguna and Ward there, and they’re fine.”
“Laguna,” Squall faced him, “Are you serious!?”
“Yeah…seems he got out of the situation somehow. They said they had been trying to get a hold of me, but I wasn’t at the palace so I didn’t get that call. By the way…what happened to Laguna’s office?”
“I have no idea,” Squall shook his head, “but it’s a good possibility that guy is gone for good. I can’t say what happened in the palace when he took it over, but whatever it was it was enough to get him to leave.”
“Well…I was fixing to make a trip to Deling to check on Laguna and Ward…I’ll let you know when I get them back.”
“Alright, and Kiros…”
“Yeah?”
“Tell Laguna I’m glad he’s alright.”
“I’ll do that. I’ll see you later Squall.” Kiros waved then turned and headed back in the direction he had come from. Squall returned his wave then continued on his way back to the air station.
“No,” she shook her head, “when I look at you I still feel so much. My mind is in a state of confusion telling me to touch you, but then at the same time it tells me it’s not possible.
